I was extremely lucky enough to get to see The Lightning Thief Musical when it was on tour! I watched it on June 7th in Atlanta but I still remember one of the best days ever like it was yesterday! I kept meaning to write a review and rave about it… but I kept procrastinating.
ANWAY, when I watched it I thought that that was it… the musical was coming to an end. bUT SURPRISE! IT’S ON BROADWAY AND IF YOU’RE ABLE TO GO SEE IT YOU TOTALLY SHOULD! It’s only a limited run until January 5th SO GO SEE IT BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!
If you can’t see it, definitely listen to the cast album on Spotify! OR BUY IT. THAT’S GOOD TOO. SUPPORT MY DEMIGOD SQUAD OKAY?!
Two years ago, everything changed when I saw the first clip of Chris McCarrell singing ‘Good Kid’ for the musical. I FREAKED OUT because oh my gods A MUSICAL? Was this REAL?!
YES. YES IT WAS. ABSOLUTELY REAL.
Anyway, it was Off-Broadway for a while and all I could do was hope that we’d get a cast recording AND VOILA! Honestly demigods have some serious powers because then we got a glorious cast album and then eventually it came on Spotify and THEN THEY WENT ON TOUR!
I actually didn’t think I’d get to see it because of med school and studyign abroad but I just happened to go home this year for a month in the summer and honestly the Fates must have willed it because they happened to be in Atlanta while I was there and my parents said that I could go with my siblings so OF COURSE I WENT.

The first moment I entered, it was magical because so many people were wearing Camp Half-Blood t-shirts. My favorite part was seeing all the young demigods and all the older demigods together!
Before the show started, the ambience was so nice because sounds of thunder were playing with the occasional sound of wind chimes and lightning. Then the show started and I was immediately in love. When Chris McCarrell came onstage he literally had to pause to let everyone finish screaming it was BEAUTIFUL.
The costume for the Minotaur and the Oracle and Cerberus and Medusa were THE BEST. It was so creative and well done! Also, when Percy’s pen turned into the sword it LITERALLY APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE. MAGIC. SORCERY.
My favorite song from the Soundtrack was DRIVE because it’s just so upbeat and fun and a great way to speed through the plot of the book while still remaining accurate (plus, a little nod to Nico and Bianca from later in the series!). One song I really wanted to see performed live was DOA just because I had no idea how to imagine what would happen. It definitely moved to the top of my favorites list after seeing it performed!
(Plus it has one of the most heart wrenching foreshadowing lyrics: You ain’t ever gonna save what matters/You ain’t gonna protect your friends/You ain’t ever gonna be remembered)
When Put You In Your Place came on IT WAS EVEN MORE ICONIC LIVE, Y’ALL. TOILET EXPLOSIONS, SUPERB HIGH NOTES, ACTION?! YES.
I wanted to yell out “I believe in you, Annabeth!” when Kristen sand her heart out with My Grand Plan!
Also, let’s not forget the tears in my eyes with The Tree on the Hill and Bring on the Monsters! Jorell did such a great job playing Grover AND MR. D!
I LOVED all the actual book quotes scattered throughout the soundtrack AND THE PLAY. But even if you haven’t read the book (PLEASE DO IT), you would love this musical!
This musical wasn’t something I knew could ever exist but I’m so glad it does! It was a hilarious and fun adventure filled with puns! The Percy Jackson fandom finally got an awesome adaptation and EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW IT.

After the show, I of course got some merch for myself! BUT FEAR NOT, MORTALS! YOU CAN ALSO GET MERCH. DO YOU WANT A GLOW-IN-THE-DARK ENAMEL LIGHTNING PIN? A PLUSHIE SQUIRREL (Lost! was one of my favorite songs too, on that note), T SHIRTS, WINGED SOCKS COURTESY OF HERMES? GO CHECK OUT ALL THE DEMIGOD ESSENTIALS HERE.
If you love Percy Jackson (duh), greek mythology told in a fun way, swordfighting, really dorky jokes, road trips filled with monsters and death, friendships and family, prophecies, and a musical with an actual splash zone (as the son of Poseidon, what would you expect?), you’ll love the Lightning Thief Musical!
Before you go, make sure to check out the Lightning Thief Musical WEBSITE and TWITTER (the only account worth following–they’re absolutely hilarious!). And in case you aren’t convinced that the music isn’t amazing, here’s a few more clips of the cast singing!
I’m so happy you managed to get to see this!
I desperately wanted to see it in NY but things didn’t work out. Thank goodness the soundtrack is on Spotify 😍 (and you’re right – the Twitter account is a GIFT)
I’m so glad that fans finally get an adaptation we deserve after, shall we say, less successful attempts.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It was a ton of fun to read about from a fan’s perspective! All the ‘official’ reviews seemed to miss the point entirely. I have yet to hear a single fan of the series have any major qualms.

It sounds so fun. I really wish I could go, because I heard amazing things, but it’d be off Broadway when I go to New York in March. I really hope it comes back and does a tour around the country or something, that’d be cool.
I literally adore that outfit. Your hijab goes with you camp halfblood shirt so well, and I’m honestly a little jealous that you have a camp halfblood shirt.
