Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar
Publication Date: August 11th, 2020 from HarperTeen
Rating: 5/5

The daughter of a star and a mortal, Sheetal is used to keeping secrets. Pretending to be “normal.” But when an accidental flare of her starfire puts her human father in the hospital, Sheetal needs a full star’s help to heal him. A star like her mother, who returned to the sky long ago.
Sheetal’s quest to save her father will take her to a celestial court of shining wonders and dark shadows, where she must take the stage as her family’s champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of the heavens–and win, or risk never returning to Earth at all.
I received this book from the publisher but this does not affect my review which is unbiased and honest.
So what attracted me to this book was that this is totally something I would just pick up because the title is literally my brand (duh) and the cover alone should inspire you to pick this up because it’s absolutely STUNNING.
As soon as I started the book I was already intrigued because Sheetal’s voice was just so relatable to read! The first page and I was already laughing at the way she talked about the desi Bragging Brigade! The descriptions of the music and dresses and oh my goodness the FOOD just made my heart happy!
Basically, Sheetal is a half-star who accidentally burns her father and takes a journey to the skies so she can heal her father before it’s too late! But there’s more at stake when Sheetal makes a deal. To save her father, she must serve as her family court’s champion before her birthday and win the competition.
I also just really enjoyed the desi family drama. Honestly too relatable! Plus, a family of stars?! Iconic. Not only did this have perfect amount of drama, but this really spoke to my soul as Sheetal found herself. I’m a sucker for beautiful character arcs and this had a wonderful one!
I absolutely LOVED the backstory and the storytelling involved with the history of Stars and Sheetal’s family. That was definitely one of my favorite parts of the book!
This felt like a blend of my favorite parts of Star Touched Queen and Stardust. This was a beautiful blend of fantasy, contemporary, and Hindu mythology. If you enjoy lyrical writing, absolutely magical worlds, daughters that will do anything to save their father, relationship drama, and talent shows you’ll definitely enjoy this!
You’ll love this book if you love music, traveling to new realms, a hall of mirrors, amazing best friends, really delicious food, and sneaky plans, revelations, and sabotage! If you enjoy competitions, hindu mythology and desi culture, and beautiful imagery, definitely make sure to check out this book!

The book looks and sounds absolutely incredible. I can’t wait to get my copy of it, which (insha’Allah) I shall be getting sometime next month. I love South Asian books so much and seeing/feeling that cultural representation I never got as a kid. Couple that with some fantastic fantasy elements and I basically swooning haha.
